DESIGN DIRECTOR, SENIOR DESIGNER, NEWS EDITOR, COPY EDITOR, REPORTER, San Diego Union-Tribune, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Salt Lake Tribune, Missoulian

Beginning in 1982 and for the next 20 years or so, I was a reporter, news editor, manager, designer and photo/art director.

• I led a comprehensive redesign of The Salt Lake Tribune as director of design in 2003. Above are pages of the paper before the redesign and after. Click images to view larger PDF or JPG.

• As a news editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, I supervised a copy desk of about 10 editors and assisted the lead projects editor in story development. I won numerous awards, including best-designed front page in Texas three out four years.
• Working as a news editor/art director at the San Diego Union-Tribune, I designed the Sunday opinion section and helped solicit commentary and analysis on a wide range of public policy and politics.
• I taught editing and design and led workshops at Utah State University and the University of Utah. I served as an adviser to the staff of the Utah Daily Chronicle, University of Utah's student newspaper, as the paper moved from a tabloid format to broadsheet.
