COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST , Utah Democratic Party

The Democratic Party of Utah exists to increase the number of Democrats holding public office. It attempts to do this by building and sustaining party infrastructure, recruiting qualified candidates and assisting their campaigns, and supporting Democratic officeholders.

I was Communications Specialist from April 2007 through November 2008. The position was part of the Democratic National Committee's 50-State Partnership Program, an experiment in grass-roots party building initiated by Chairman Howard Dean. Funding for the program ended several weeks after the election.

During that period I wrote a draft memo on how communication could support the party's organizational structure. Then based on that, I adopted a communication goal, a strategy, and a broad array of tactics to tell the story of Democrats in Utah.

  • The goal: measurably increase the visibility and viability of the party, its policy positions, and its activities – its brand
  • The strategy: create and distribute a thematic message consistent with the party's brand and integrate it into all party communication. The theme was titled "Utah Common Values"
  • The tactics: produce an electronic newsletter, a print newsletter, blogs, op-eds, letters to the editor, news releases, news conferences, still photography, collateral graphic design, PowerPoint presentations, among others

The plan exploited interest generated by the presidential campaign, and awareness of the party skyrocketed.
