McCAIN MYTHBUSTERS After casting himself as a "maverick" in 2000, the new John McCain is walking in lockstep with President Bush, pandering to the right wing of the Republican Party, and embracing the ideology he once denounced. On the campaign trail McCain has callously abandoned many of his previously held positions, even contradicted himself, in a blatant attempt to remake himself into a candidate Republicans can accept in 2008. This series exposes the man behind the myth as Utahns are asked to help McCain fill his coffers at upcoming fundraisers in Utah. FROM THE CHAIR | Wayne Holland Over the last three years, it has become obvious that the winds of political change are blowing through the Mountain West. And just as obvious is the role of Utah in establishing the Rocky Mountain states as fertile for Democratic growth. Record breaking attendance at recent state and county conventions provides clear evidence that the principles we stand for are resonating with Utahns. Throughout the state in the months leading up to our state convention, we welcomed independents and moderate Republicans who have come to see that the Democratic Party represents core and common values of Utah. This historical election year offers opportunities we have not seen in a long time. The choice for voters is clear: Continue to follow policies that are divisive and harmful to America or move toward progressive change. The obstacles are large but the opportunities are larger. Help us win in November. Find out results of elections held at the State Party Convention on May 10. The Karen Shepherd Fund is accepting applications for upcoming campaigns. The fund provides stipends to interns for Democratic candidates running in local, state, and federal campaigns in Utah. BLOGS | Utah Amicus in Denver The Democratic National Committee recently awarded Rob Miller, vice chair of the party and founder of the Utah Amicus, blogger credentials to the national convention in Denver. He'll be offering a Utah point of view as part of the convention's 50-state blogger corps. “I was elated. I just started jumping up and down like a little kid,” said Miller. “What an honor … what an honor to be the first blogger credentialed by the DNCC from Utah.” Miller said his Amicus is a community blog. It's not the Rob Miller Amicus. It is the Utah Amicus. "I appreciate and enjoy all the posts I receive. I don't know if words can explain how grateful I am to have this opportunity to be eyes and ears of the Utah blogosphere in Denver." (Miller points out that amicus means "friend") The Democratic National Convention will be Aug. 25-28. Click here for more information. Submit a blog to utahamicus@aol.com and check out the blog at www.utahamicus.com. Update: Miller has become the manager of Jean Welch Hill's bid to become Utah's next attorney general.
