The Democratic Party of Utah, through its platform and policy proposals of its lawmakers and candidates, better represents the values all Utahns have in common than the Republican Party.

We are guided by social and religious convictions that tell us the unrelenting cycle of attack and retaliation demonstrated by Republican leadership is hurting our democracy ... and besides that it's just plain wrong. How many civic-minded citizens are discouraged by the sheer viciousness they'd have to endure as part-time public servants in Utah?

All of our candidates believe in shared responsibility, helping our neighbors and building strong communities, sustaining a safe and healthy environment for our families and friends.

We believe in fiscal responsibility, common sense solutions to seemingly intractable problems, and reaching across the partisan divide. We believe that public servants should conduct the people's business openly and should be held accountable to misconduct.

This is the promise of Democrats in Utah.

I vote for education. I am a Democrat.

RaDene Hatfield. Provo. Mother of three. School Volunteer. Latter-day Saint.

Parents are working harder than ever to keep up with the cost of living leaving them with less time to volunteer in our schools. Our neighborhood schools rely on the volunteer work parents and grandparents provide to help all our children. Volunteers are a critically important resource for our Utah education system, helping our kids to perform well despite the lowest per-pupil expenditures in the nation. Utah needs to invest in education. And, we need an economy that works for people who work for a living, giving parents more time to spend with their kids to teach them the values that make America strong and prosperous.

I vote for lower taxes. I am a Democrat.

J. Dell Holbrook. West Bountiful. Small Business Owner. Game hunter. Latter-day Saint.

The last thing we need in the midst of a recession is to raise taxes on middle class Utahns who need more money in their pockets, not less. The question for voters isn’t, “Who’s going to raise your taxes?” It is “Whose taxes are your elected officials going to cut, yours or their campaign contributors?” We need to stop property taxes driving people from their homes, especially seniors on fixed incomes. We can use tax credits to limit the percent of family income anyone has to pay in property taxes. This would preserve the quality of neighborhood schools and law enforcement which often rely on property taxes for funding.

I vote for America. I am a Democrat.

Jim Gowans. Tooele. Rancher. Retired Educator. Latter-day Saint.

I want to see the words “Made in America” again. Becoming the world’s leader again in manufacturing and agriculture isn’t just essential to our economic security. It is essential to our national security. Imagine if we’d had to fight World War II without manufacturing plants and American-grown food. We need to invest in education and affordable college so American workers can compete in the global economy. We need to invest in new energy sources that reduce the price of gas, create millions of jobs, and free us from our dependence on petty dictators in unstable regions for their oil. It’s time to put America first again.
